El The first National Congress on Compressed and Liquid Natural Gas was held on October 10-12 at the Polifórum in the City of León, Guanajuato, with the goal of driving and promoting the use of this generous hydrocarbon which, apart from being efficient, is cheap and environmentally friendly. The event gathered the most important corporations in the country, including suppliers and distributors of compressed natural gas, liquid gas, vehicular natural gas, maritime industry natural gas, and railroad natural gas, with the participation at the event of GPPA’s General Director Professor Julio David Zárate Lomelí jointly with NRGI BROKER Lic. Graciela Álvarez Hoth with the lecture titled “Midstream Insurance and Environmental Challenges”.

The “Ley General del Equilibrio Ecológico y la Protección al Ambiente” (LGEEPA) [General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection] regulates, as per its title, everything related to the preservation and restoration of ecological balance, as well as environmental protection within the national territory and the areas in which the country exercises its sovereignty and jurisdiction. This provision of the law established the foundations and guidelines which all other laws and regulations must follow on the subject.

The “Federal Law on Environmental Liability” (LFRA, in Spanish) regulates, as per its title, environmental liability resulting from damages caused to the environment, as well as the reparation and compensations for said damages when enforceable by means of the appropriate procedures.

Environmental Baseline Studies (LBA, in Spanish) are specialized technical studies required by the Agencia de Seguridad, Energía y Ambiente (ASEA) [Agency for Safety, Energy , and Environment] of the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) [Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources], imposed on every stakeholder of the hydrocarbons sector: to determine the environmental conditions of environmental components in an area covered by a given contract, as well as for the identification and registration of preexisting and environmental damages in the area.

The “Energy Reform” of 2013 meant the opening of the various spheres of the sector, previously reserved to government entities, to private corporations, including infrastructure, hydrocarbons and energy, leading to a strategic model wherein investors can participate in the development of projects in those fields as State Productive Corporations (EPE, in Spanish).

The Agreement for the Sustainability of the Yucatan Peninsula (ASPY) was signed on November 30, 2017, at Rio Secreto. This is a voluntary declaration resulting from the will of companies to move forward toward ecology- and community-friendly operations. The government of the three states of the Peninsula (Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo) signed the ASPY, and GPPA voluntarily adhered to this agreement in order to promote, report and encourage good environmental practices on the RSE principles, as per the RSE - Aliarse Promoting Committee of Quintana Roo. Our Operations Director, Hector Alafita signed this agreement as part of GPPA’s commitment to sustainability.

GPPA, is a full partner of the Social Responsibility Promotion Committee of Quintana Roo, a member of the Board, and leader of the Environmental Coordination and of ASPY 2030, the latter having the objective of promoting national and international Corporate Social Responsibility Strategies, guided by tools such as the Sustainability Agreement of the Yucatan Peninsula (S¡ASPY 2030), the ESR (Socially Responsible Company, in Spanish) Distinction, the Global Pact, the SDGs, among others, among the various sectors of society.

At the request of the General Direction of Environmental Hazards and Impacts of SEMARNAT (Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico), GPPA’s Science Director, Master of Sciences José Luis Rojas, participated in an honorary capacity in the organization, coordination and teaching of the second course on Coastal Wetlands, “Foundations, Principles, Reasons, and Instances of Hydrological Rehabilitation, Restoration, and Protection of Coastal Wetlands”, jointly taught by Dr. Francisco Flores Verdugo, addressing evaluators of that federal entity. The course covered 20 hours on September 25-29. In this way, GPPA seeks to provide useful, decision-making relevant, technical-scientific information to environmental evaluators.

Last December 9, 2016, GPPA signed a collaboration agreement with OTH Praxis Estratégica, specialists in offering administrative management solutions aimed at specific results, internal control, transparency, and accountability processes for the public and private sectors. The objective of the agreement was to develop a technical-scientific services platform for the Energy Sector, integrating top, nationally and internationally renown corporations, organizations, and networks. The agreement was signed by Marco Antonio Aurelio Torres H Mantecón, Director Partner of OTH and David Zárate Lomelí, General Director of GPPA.

Last November 30, 2016, at the facilities of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) a collaboration agreement was formally established between the School of Biological Sciences (FCB, in Spanish) of UANL and GPPA, whose main objective is to renew the link between both institutions in order to join efforts and capabilities aimed at carrying out common interest tasks, by means of shared tasks, such as: the generation, development, transfer, and commercialization of environmental technologies; the innovation, development, and environmental scientific research, develop sustainable projects, among others. The agreement was signed by the director of the School of Sciences of UNAL, Dr. Antonio Guzmán Velasco, by the General Attorney of UNAL, Mr. Javier Gutiérrez Arguelles, designating Dr. José Ignacio González Rojas, Deputy Director, as Technical Spokesman , and by David Zárate Lomelí, General Director of GPPA.

Last June 12, 2017, at the facilities of the Supreme Seat of Learning in the country, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), a collaboration agreement was formally established between the Institute of Biology (IB) of UNAM and GPPA, whose main objective is to join scientific and technological collaboration tasks in order to promote and carry out activities, research, and projects aimed at obtaining environmental sustainability. The agreement was signed by Dr. William Henry Lee Alardín, Coordinator of Scientific Research of UNAM and Dr. Víctor Manuel Sánchez Cordero Dávila, Director of the IB-UNAM, as well as by David Zárate Lomelí, General Director of GPPA.

On November 29, 2016, the GPPA CEO, M.Sc. David Zárate Lomelí, and the GPPA Scientific Director, M.Sc. José Luis Rojas Galavíz, Scientific Director, presented the Scientific Council (SC) of GPPA that this conformed by a group of leading scientists from academic institutions and institutes specializing in the areas of environment and sustainable development, who will support to GPPA.

The main objective of the SC is to periodically analyze issues related to the company's science and technological innovation activities and to propose recommendations that strengthen the scientific basis of the products and services offered to its clients and stakeholders.

GPPA continues building alliances to serve the energy market, offering integral environmental solutions to solve the challenges and opportunities during the implementation of projects, plans and development programs. This alliances will allow its private and public sector clients to increase the value of its investments while promoting sustainable development directly.

EarthCheck, the global leader in sustainable tourism, has signed a service and support agreement with GPPA, a leading environmental consulting firm for the tourism industry in Mexico.

David Zárate Lomeli, CEO of GPPA, noted that the agreement marked an exciting juncture for sustainable tourism in the region.

Mr. Zárate said, “Partnering with EarthCheck was a natural choice. Both organizations have extensive experience and are widely recognized as leaders in the products and services we provide. Our agreement will provide exciting opportunities for the Mexican tourism industry.”

The commercial alliance signed between GPPA and EarthCheck offers the possibility of a comprehensive platform of sustainable services to the tourism sector in Mexico. Such a platform does not exist in Mexico today but would allow the integration of more technical and scientific capacities of both organizations. The result will be an implementation of innovative development concepts with a deep sense of environmental and social responsibility underpinned by internationally recognized standards.

EarthCheck has worked with in Mexico for over a decade with clients ranging from world-leading destinations like Huatulco to golf courses, hotels and tour operators.

Mr. Stewart Moore, CEO and founder of EarthCheck, said that sustainable tourism plays a key part in preserving Mexico’s local culture and environment.

Mr. Moore said, “This strategic agreement with GPPA will support EarthCheck’s commitment to delivering the highest level of service to its Mexican members.

Since June 2015, GPPA is an official member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which is an international organization whose mission is to promote a greater awareness, understanding and adoption of sustainable tourism practices. Among the main sustainability criteria established by this Council include:

1. To provide basic guidelines for the destinations that want to become more sustainable.

2. To help consumers to identify those sustainable tourism destinations.

3. To serve as a common denominator for media to recognize tourism destinations and inform the public about its sustainability.

These criteria are also widely shared and promoted by GPPA.

GPPA will clearly show the statement of this commitment to its stakeholders: customers, employees, partners, suppliers, society, government and the general public.
